Mazda has been an industry leader since its founding in Hiroshima in 1920 with a versatile line-up of cars, trucks and SUVs all with a notable performance slant. Originally named the Toyo Cork Kogyo Company, the car maker began its journey to automotive excellence as a manufacturer of machine tools before it switched its focus to automobiles. In 1927, the marque underwent a slight name change, rebranding itself as Toyo Kogyo, Ltd. and produced its first model, the Mazdago. The Mazdago was an inspired design that brought together the versatility of an open wagon design, the agility of a motorcycle and the utility of a pickup. Its unique, three wheel design made it both incredibly nimble and eye-catching as it zoomed down the roads of Hiroshima. The founder of the company, Jujiro Matsuda, chose the name Mazda in honor of the Zoroastrian god of goodness and light in the hope that such an auspicious name would bring good fortune to the company. With the arrival of WWII Mazda, like all Japanese automakers, was pressed into service for the military, effectively bring the nascent brand's momentum to a halt.
The decades after the war were difficult but in 1960 Mazda debuted the two-door R360 which was the first truly modern Mazda coupe and would become the model for all successive generations of Mazda vehicles exemplifying efficiency, performance and style that put it a cut above the rest. In the 1970s, Mazda began to export its lines of cars and trucks to the US and, as luck would have it, Mazda vehicles proved to be a great alternative to American-made gas guzzlers during the oil-crisis. The famed RX-7 was first released during the second-half of the decade and became an instant success as a result of its Wankel-designed rotary engine. In spite of all of its successes, Mazda was in dire financial straits which led to Ford Motor Company bailing them out in 1979. This investment resulted in the redesign of the B-line of trucks as well as in the creation of the Escort.
