What to Wrap on Your Motorcycle

When using the Avery Dennison™ SW900 Series Motorcycle Wrap films, there are several areas on a motorcycle that are ideal for wrapping to achieve a dynamic and refreshed appearance. Here are the recommended sections to consider:

  1. Fuel Tank: Often the most visible part of a motorcycle, the fuel tank provides a large, smooth surface that's perfect for showcasing the wrap's finish and color.

  2. Fenders: Both front and rear fenders are prime locations for wrapping. They protect the motorcycle from dirt and debris, and a wrap can add an extra layer of protection while enhancing aesthetics.

  3. Fairings: If your motorcycle has fairings, these offer expansive surfaces for wrapping. Fairings often bear the brunt of wear and tear from the road, so a wrap can provide both a protective and cosmetic upgrade.

  4. Side Panels: Located below the seat and flanking the rear wheel, side panels can be a focal point, especially on racing or touring bikes.

  5. Front Cowl or Windshield: For bikes equipped with a cowl or windshield, wrapping can give a unified look to the motorcycle's front end.

  6. Fork Guards: These are often overlooked but can be a subtle place to add a touch of the wrap for continuity.

  7. Tail Section: The tail or rear section of the motorcycle is another area that can be wrapped, especially on sport or racing bikes where it is more prominent.

  8. Chain Guard and Swingarm: Though these areas are more functional than aesthetic, wrapping them can add a cohesive look to the bike.

  9. Wheels and Rims: While not common due to their exposure to heat and brake dust, adventurous DIYers can consider wrapping the rims or certain sections of the wheels for a distinct appearance.

  10. Mudguards: Particularly for off-road or adventure bikes, wrapping mudguards can offer an extra layer of protection and style.

Wrapping can be a daunting task, especially if it's your first time doing it. But, I was pleasantly surprised with my wrapping skills. I followed some DIY videos that provided me with useful tips, and the outcome was fantastic.

I also learned a few tips that I wish I had read earlier. Firstly, it's crucial to clean your item thoroughly using isopropyl alcohol or clay barring to remove contaminants that could affect how well the vinyl sticks. Secondly, always use a little extra vinyl than you need; it helps when you come across wrinkles, air bubbles, or "fingers." Extra vinyl makes it easier to squeegee out any wrinkles, and it also prevents possible tearing.

Thirdly, a heat gun or hairdryer is your best friend. Minimal heat is recommended, and it helps to pre-heat the vinyl before applying it to your object. The vinyl becomes soft and stretchy, making it easier to apply and taking the shape of your object. Applying heat to the edge will cause the vinyl to naturally fall over it and stick better.

Fourthly, don't be scared to pull or lift the vinyl. It's durable material but avoid over-stretching it. Fifthly, keep a close eye on how the vinyl is being applied. If an air bubble appears, it's easier to pull back and work the bubble out than to try and remove it after finishing the wrapping. You can use an old credit or gift card or squeegee to remove any air bubbles.

Lastly, don't forget to post-heat the entire area you've wrapped using a heat gun. It's just as important as prepping the area you're about to cover. Post heating prevents the vinyl from trying to pull back and go back to its natural form, ensuring that your wrap won't lift or curl back.

Hello I had purchased the gloss black I’m wrapping my 2002 ninja is the 60 x 12 enough
May 20, 2020 9:28 PM
Mathew, You are going to have to do a little work and measure each individual panel. The easiest way is with a string. Measure the height and the width of each panel. Then figure out the total square feet needed. Then purchase either several smaller wraps or one large one you can trim down.

Doesn’t tell me how much I got 12 ft x 13 ft total an that’s 2 inches each side
May 27, 2020 9:09 AM
Mathew, Thanks for the question. That size is our smallest. You could certainly wrap a portion of your bike, but not the whole bike. It’s best to determine the area of each motorbike component, then add on a yard of material to be safe. We have two great articles you can read to help in your buying decision: Buying Guide How Much Vinyl To Buy

Can you suggest a color match for a red 2020 Ducati Streetfighter v4? I have some small parts I would like to wrap and would like to match the stock Ducati red. Thank you.

Paddymon, That's a mean bike! We don't offer a factory color match, but we have heard that Avery Dennison® SW900 Supreme Wrapping Gloss Carmine Red Film is a pretty close match.

How well does the wrap perform around the gas cap? Is it resistant to spillage? I want my tank to have two colors, can the wrap be layered, as in one color be layered over another color with the same adhesive performance as a single layer?
