Cadillac is one of the most venerable names in the history of American automobiles. In existence for well over a century, Cadillac had a surprising beginning as the Henry Ford Company when Ford and a number of partners left the company and it was subsequently purchased by Henry M. Leland making it the second oldest automotive brand in existence today. Taking its name from the Seventeenth Century French explorer and founder of Detroit, Antoine Laumet de la Mothe, Sieur de Cadillac, its first two production automobiles were completed in 1902 and were named the Runabout and Tonneau.
Known for its precision engineering and luxury finishes, Cadillac was acquired by
GM in 1909 which continued the legacy of luxury by designated it as the company's premium marque and the first company in the US to engineer a V8 engine. In 1917, The US Army required a high-quality staff car and commissioned the Cadillac Type 55 Touring Model for use in France during World War I. In the years between WWI and WWII Cadillac built many large, custom coaches with V12 and even V16 engines while focusing its marketing efforts on upmarket buyers.
Cadillac surged in sales and in prominence during WWII and after the War became the luxury car maker par excellence. The iconic Cadillac “tail fin” debuted in 1948 and were inspired by the aircraft that had become so commonplace during WWII. The heavy stylistic use of chrome also was en vogue in the years following the War and was yet one more design element that distinguished Cadillac from its rivals. It was at this time that the now famous El Dorado and Coupe DeVille premiered. Popular with the rich and powerful, Cadillac received great product placement in many movies of the times as well a free ad dollars from the many celebrities and athletes who championed their everyday use. In 1957, the Eldorado Brougham burst onto the scene and sported so-called memory seating which allowed seating preferences to be saved and recalled for differing drivers. Another advancement seen in the '57 Brougham was the completely transistor-based radio manufactured by Delco Radio.
Throughout the Sixties Cadillac stayed the course and produced large and highly styled land cruisers but it wasn't until 1975 that the Seville was released. Ahead of its time in almost every way, the Cadillac Seville was replete with electronic fuel injection and helped to save the marque from the fuel crisis that crippled many US automakers in the 1970s. Sadly, as the fuel crises continued and American tastes grew to favor compact cars with better fuel efficiency Cadillac sales began to slump. As a result, Cadillac reduced the size of its line-up and introduced its first two-wheel drive vehicle in the decades that followed.
It wasn't until the turn of the millennium that Cadillac once more hit its stride. Bounding back from obscurity and near obsolescence Cadillac stormed the scene with great entries such as the DTS, the CTS-V and the award-winning Escalade. Cadillac has once more reclaimed the title of the definitive American luxury brand representing that elusive but always sought after blend of style, comfort and elegance. Whether it is a Seville, an El Dorado, a CTS or an Escalade EXT one thing is certain: Cadillac's lend their drivers the self-same aura of respect, sophistication and luxury that these vehicles have come to represent.
