Jeep is a brand forged in the flames battle and proven on the fields of war and the legendary CJ-2A was the civilian crossover that helped to secure the automaker its place in civilians’ hearts all across the USA. Nonetheless, when Americans first began their love affair with Jeeps in the 1950s the brand attracted primarily tradesmen and those in the agricultural business.
The arrival of the Sixties witnesses the release of the Wagoneer which was a trailblazing sports utility vehicle long before the term SUV was coined. This pioneering vehicle sported four wheel drive and used an automatic transmission—presaging the Cherokees that would take the US by storm 30 years later. During the same time optional V6 engines were debuted for the CJ-5 and CJ-6 which were able to produce more the 150hp and rendered the CJ models even more popular. Jeep’s ownership changed once again at the beginning of the 1970s when it was bought by AMC (American Motor Company) and quickly developed the CJ-7 and Scrambler. In addition to big structural changes in the company at this time, the marque also introduced its acclaimed Quadra-Trac system.
The Eighties were truly a time when Jeep came of age and gained mainstream acceptance with the release of the Wrangler and the Cherokee. With the start of the Nineties the company changed hands once again as it was bought out by Chryslers. During this time sales of Wranglers, Cherokees and Grand Cherokees inspired a surge of confidence in the brand but, by the time of the Daimler Chrysler merger the brand seemed to be in peril of being cut. Fortunately, the continuous innovation of the designers at Jeep led to the debut of the Liberty which helped to stabilize its trajectory. As the market changed with the introduction of a variety of crossover SUVs Jeep was able to compete with offerings such as the Compass, Commander and Patriot while still holding true to its roots with the Wrangler.
