There's simply no question that Nissan is one of the world's leading
car makers with a full roster of cars, trucks and SUVs that run the
gambit from the fuel-efficient, commuter-oriented Sentra, to the
performance-driven GT-R and the crossover Murano. In addition to an
incredible line-up the company has a strong history which can trace its
roots directly to its founding in 1933 under the name Jidosha Seico Co,
Ltd. It was not until the following year that, as a result of a merger,
the company received its world-famous name. Throughout WWII, Nissan and
Datsun worked to provide the Japanese Imperial forces with vehicles and
sold solely to the domestic market until 1959 when the first exports
reached the shores of America. At its debut during the Los Angeles Motor
Show of that same year, Nissan/Datsun was lauded for their wide array of
lean, mean and fuel-efficient vehicles.
The Sixties were a decade that witnessed great changes for the
automaker. After merging with the Prince Motor Company, the brand began
to move ever closer to creating a line of luxury vehicles to complement
the rest of its offerings. The Datsun 510 (also branded as the Nissan
Bluebird) was the outcome of this new direction and was the first
vehicle to be released for the US domestic market with a
European-inspired design philosophy and a reasonable price. Through the
1970s the trend towards the production of higher-quality vehicles that
were still affordable continued until the 1980s when the Datsun branding
was completely dropped in favor of Nissan. The efficient and lean Sentra
was Nissan's debut model and quickly rose through the ranks to be one of
the company's best-sellers. In addition to the venerable Sentra, Nissan
also fielded greats like the Maxima, and Pathfinder, both of which
helped to bolster the brand and proved that it was a force to be
reckoned with. The Altima, introduced early on in the Nineties,
completed the triumvirate and firmly established the marque as a leader
in the US market-a position it continues to enjoy today almost twenty
As anyone familiar with the American automotive scene knows, the
Altima and Maxima make a strong showing in any parking lot or traffic
jam and don't seem to be falling out of favor anytime soon. Still,
Nissan is not a company prone to sitting on its laurels and has
continued to innovate technologically and stylistically. Evidence of
this are the fuel-efficient but idiosyncratic Cube and the crossover
Juke. In addition to such novel entries, Nissan has continuously
improved its existing models such as the Pathfinder and the Nissan
Armada. Nissan seems intent on ranking first in every segment of the
market which is why it is no surprise that the Xterra and the Murano
have both excelled as crossovers despite their different design styles.
Of course, no account of the Nissan brand would be complete without
making mention of the tuner and performance beloved 350Z , the370Z
roadster or the GT-R whose iconic taillights can be found littered
across Instagram and Pinterest alike. And, last but not least, Nissan
has shown that it can stand up to the big boys when it comes to fielding
a pickup with guts as its massive Titan has gained in popularity in
