Lightning Wraps

Lightning Wraps

Lightning vinyl wraps are the perfect accessory for your ride if you have felt a rush when you spot a lightning storm in the distance. Vinyl wraps are a wonderful addition to elevate the appearance of your car without the costly, permanent commitment of paint or other design features.

Shroud your ride with our lightning wraps like you've caught lightning in a bottle and loaded your engine with its power. You can also apply our lightning wraps to your interior trim or adorn your phone, guitar, fridge or any object of your choosing with the electrifying pattern.

What Are Lightning Wraps?

What Are Lightning Wraps?

Lightning wraps are a stylized film used to conceal and protect various surfaces. They are made from flexible vinyl fabric with an adhesive on one side that sticks to the desired surface and are most commonly — but not exclusively — applied to the interior or exterior of a vehicle aftermarket. The adhesive material on vinyl wraps is pressure-sensitive. Combine that with the air-egress release liners on our lightning wraps that reduce air entrapment bubbling, and you have the recipe for a simple installation process.

The "lightning" in lightning wraps refers to the electric pattern of this particular style, mimicking the awe-inspiring tableau of bolts raining down from the proverbial heavens. Our lightning wraps at Rvinyl come with the following features:

  • Bubble-free results with a pressure-sensitive adhesive and air-egress release liners
  • Heat-activated vinyl for smooth installation
  • 3 mm thick wraps for maximum flexibility
  • UV-reflective coating to enhance color stability and prevent fading

Lightning Wrap Options

In addition to the standard features of lightning wraps, they also come in different colors and a variety of sizes.

Size

When determining the size of the lightning wrap you need, it is a good idea to err on the safe side and order more than you need. Doing so will provide some insurance in case you accidentally damage part of the vinyl, or you need to re-do a section due to an error in application or use. If you end up with extra, you could always find another surface that might benefit from the electric feel of a lightning wrap, such as a phone, fridge, bike or other smaller items.

Our lightning wraps come in four different widths of 12, 48 and 60 inches and we sell rolls in lengths of up to 25 yards. The complete list of available sizes is as follows:

  • 12" x 60"
  • 24" x 60"
  • 60" x 24"
  • 60" x 36"
  • 60" x 48"
  • 60" x 60"
  • 60" x 72"
  • 60" x 84"
  • 60" x 96"
  • 60" x 108"
  • 60" x 120"
  • 60" x 5yd
  • 60" x 10yd
  • 60" x 15yd
  • 60" x 20yd
  • 60" x 25yd

Figuring out the amount of wrap you need requires some field research on your part. Since cars don't measure an exact square all the way around, and many may have especially difficult parts to measure around, like spoilers and sunroofs, you'll need to approach measuring in a certain way. It's always best to have more material, but you certainly don't want to purchase twice as much as you'll really need.

First, however, you'll need to decide how much of your car you want to wrap — would you like the whole car covered from headline to taillight, or do you prefer specific placement, such as the bumpers, hood and pillars? While you won't need to measure every section of your vehicle, you should consider some essential factors as you measure your car to arrive at the most accurate estimate.

To measure accurately, you'll need:

  • A measuring tape, preferably cloth to hug the corners of your vehicle
  • A notepad and pencil to write down the measurements
  • Painter's tape to temporarily mark your measured areas

The primary measurements for determining how much vinyl you need to wrap your car or truck include:

  • The doors
  • The roof, minus any area for the sun or moon roof
  • The pillars
  • The length between the outermost edges of the front and rear fenders
  • The area of the hood and trunk

To account for the curvature of your vehicle and the extra material you will need for the installation process, add at least 3 inches to the front and back measurements on both sides of the vehicle — that is, about 12 inches in total. You can also use this simple formula once you have the measurement for one side:

  • For complete coverage of a sedan minus the bumpers, multiply the length by 3.25. If you are covering the bumpers as well, multiply the length by four.
  • For complete coverage of a truck minus the bumpers, multiply the length by three. With bumpers, multiply the length by 3.75.

You won't need to worry about the top to bottom measurement, as all wraps made for vehicles are 60 inches in width, which will cover the height of the drive and passenger side doors with ease.

Color

Our lightning wraps come in either white and black or electric blue. Whether you appreciate the look of a lightning strike captured in black and white film or want to visualize the electricity pulsing through the bolts in vibrant blue, we hope to satisfy your preferences with our lightning wrap color options.

What Are Some Lightning Wrap Applications?

Although lightning wraps are most commonly used on vehicles, you can apply them to just about any surface you please in a variety of shapes, sizes and designs. Let your creativity surge!

What Are Some Lightning Wrap Applications?

Customize Your Car or Truck

One of the most popular uses for this vinyl wrap, there are many different ways you can customize your car or truck with lightning wraps! You could go for the full coverage on the exterior, including the bumpers, or apply the wrap to particular areas, such as the hood, doors or other sections. You might find that applying the wrap to different areas of your car is a good way to start if you're unsure. Start with the hood and continue applying as you like if you really enjoy it.

But that's just the exterior — you may also want to add some spark to your interior. Whether it be the dashboard, steering wheel or interior trim, a lightning film will be sure to enliven the interior of your vehicle.

Craft Vinyl Projects

With a vinyl cutter or even a quality pair of scissors, lightning wraps are applicable to countless craft vinyl projects. Here are some craft vinyl project ideas for your lightning film:

  • Design decals on your vehicle, skateboard, bike or snowboard
  • Decor in your bedroom, den or man cave
  • Drink-ware, such as mugs or tumblers
  • Phone, tablet or laptop cover
  • Guitar or other musical instrument cases
  • Refrigerators
  • Sides of pool or football tables
  • Scrap-booking
  • Tabletops, countertops and other pieces of furniture
  • T-shirt designs

Use On Other Vehicles

Besides your car and truck, you can also apply lightning wraps to practically any other vehicle. A few of the most popular include:

  • Golf carts
  • Boats
  • Bikes
  • Motorcycles

How to Install and Remove a Vinyl Wrap On Your Vehicle

Installing the Wrap

For installing a wrap, you will want to have a few handy tools at your side so that the installation proceeds as smoothly as possible. We recommend having:

  • A heat gun
  • Lint-free cloths
  • Razors
  • Window squeegee
  • Vinyl cutters or sharp cutting tool
  • Application fluid or adhesive sealant

Once you have all of the tools needed to install the wrap, you can follow these steps to install it yourself on your chosen medium:

  1. Prep the wrap and thoroughly wash your vehicle the day before installing the wrap so that it dries completely, but avoid using waxes or protectants.
  2. Measure the application areas once again.
  3. Develop a plan for applying the wrap efficiently.
  4. Carefully remove any obstructing objects that won't be wrapped, such as hood ornaments or logos.
  5. Unroll the desired amount of vinyl and trim it to size with a razor on a clean surface free from dust and debris to avoid scratching the car surface.
  6. Remove the backing paper from the wrap with some help from a friend and position the vinyl on the panel.
  7. Tack down and anchor the wrap.
  8. Tension the wrap with a squeegee to form the film in a downward motion, removing ripples but avoiding larger creases.
  9. Heat the wrap with a heat gun and re-tension the wrap to smoothen larger creases.
  10. Cut away or tuck any excess vinyl under a corner with steady hands.

Removing the Wrap

To remove a wrap, you will also want to have a heat gun and razor on hand, in addition to an adhesive remover and cleaning solution for the underlying surface. Once you've got those tools, you can remove the wrap according to these steps:

  1. Clean the surface.
  2. Heat the vinyl with a heat gun, especially if it is below 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Starting with the hood, peel off a corner of the vinyl at a 45-degree angle with a sharp razor.
  4. Continue peeling the vinyl slowly, applying consistent pulling pressure and angle and taking extra care around contoured areas.
  5. Once the vinyl is completely peeled off, apply an adhesive remover to remove the residue from the surface.
  6. Clean your car with appropriate solutions.

If primer was used during the installation process to get the vinyl to stick faster, you will have a more challenging time removing the wrap. Since the removal process is somewhat riskier than the installation, in terms of accidental damage to the underlying surface, you may want to go with a professional vinyl removal service if a primer was used.

Benefits of Using Lightning Vinyl Wraps On Your Vehicle

It Looks Incredible

1. It Looks Incredible

Let's be honest. The main attraction of lightning vinyl is its shockingly good looks. Adding a lightning wrap to your car, boat or motorcycle will enhance its appearance in ways a simple paint job could never match. Additionally, you can always use the lighting wrap as an accent to complement another vehicle wrap color — choose a contrasting yellow to make the blue lighting wrap pop, or go with a muted grey to match the black and white lighting wrap. Whatever your design vision, this lighting wrap will add the perfect pop.

2. Protects the Underlying Surface

The benefits of lightning vinyl wraps are more than skin deep, as they also serve as a shield to protect the paint underneath from the elements. In this way, lightning vinyl can also boost the resale value of your vehicle, either directly or indirectly. While a lightning vinyl wrap may not be for everyone, it will preserve the initial paint job of the vehicle if you remove it properly prior to selling.

3. Less Maintenance and Easier to Replace Than a New Paint Job

Maintaining a quality paint job on your car requires periodic cleaning, waxing and polishing to prevent the buildup of dirt, salt and other substances that will otherwise settle into cracks in the paint and erode the handiwork. In contrast, a vinyl wrap has an innate sheen and smoothness, so there is no need for waxing and polishing. Though cleanings are occasionally necessary, they are fairly straightforward.

Moreover, any damage to the vinyl can be easily replaced without the services of a specialist. Wherever the damage is located, the portion of the vinyl covering that area can simply be removed and replaced with a new section. In contrast, any significant dings or scratches to paint can become a costly ordeal, as labor costs come into play, and often a larger area of the car needs to be repainted if a touch-up is not feasible.

4. DIY-Friendly

One of the great things about vinyl wraps is that they do not require a specialist to install or remove them. As such, you pay a flat rate for the vinyl and any installation tools you purchase to aid in the process, and the rest is up to you. This equates to significant cost savings when compared with a new paint job. With that being said, it is in your best interest to research best practices for installing or removing your vinyl wrap on your vehicle to avoid damaging the wrap and your vehicle.
