3M™ Craft Vinyl

When it comes to vinyl products, there's no bigger name than 3M™, and when you're looking for the right mix of quality and affordability, there's no better name to trust.

Whether you're looking for a scuff-resistant, intermediate-grade calendered film like the Scotchcal™ 50 Craft Vinyl or a premium-quality, cast film like the 7125 Craft Electrocut Vinyl, you'll be happy to know you can use both in your vinyl cutter. Regardless of if you've got a professional-grade Graphtec or a hobby-style Cricut, pick up a sheet or roll of 3M™ Craft Vinyl today.

What Is Craft Vinyl?

You may be wondering how craft vinyl is any different than sign or wrap vinyl. In essence, it is not much different at all, and, in many cases, it is identical to the types of vinyl sold as sign vinyl.

Although many of the same processes and materials are involved in making vinyl wraps and craft vinyl, a major difference is in their adhesives. For example, wrap vinyl has air-release channels embedded in the adhesives to make wrapping easier. Craft films do not have these air-egress adhesives, as they would make transferring graphics nearly impossible. All this leads us to the question: What is craft vinyl?

In short, craft vinyl is a PVC film product that is well-suited for scrapbooking, decoration and crafting due to its incredible versatility. Craft vinyl will also have a pressure-sensitive self-adhesive layer on its back. This adhesive layer enables you to apply it to a range of surfaces from semi-rough to smooth. Our 3M™ Scotchcal™ 7125 and 50 calendered craft vinyl versions are ideal for use in any of your crafting projects for home, school or the office.

Different Types of Vinyl Available

As you try to find vinyl that works for your needs, there are two superior vinyl options available today. To help you decide between the two, you'll need to know how they compare. The main difference between the two films detailed below comes down to their manufacture. The 3M™ 7125 Electrocut Vinyl is cast vinyl, while the 3M™ Scotchcal™ 50 Craft Vinyl is intermediate calendered vinyl.

types of 3m craft vinyl

Cast Vinyl Vs. Calendered Vinyl

3M™ electrocut cast vinyl is one of the top types of vinyl available today. Due to its manufacturing process, the vinyl comes out thinner than calendered films and offers superior durability. Often, cast vinyl is ideal for vehicle wraps, due to its ability to stand up to exterior forces. People select this film when they need something that will last a long time, while also giving a painted look to the application surface.

A variety of consumers use calendered vinyl, from businesses to DIY crafting enthusiasts, due to its affordability and solid performance. The film will be relatively thick and stiff. Calendered vinyl will range in quality from economy to intermediate. Lower-grade calendered vinyl will use a monomeric plasticizer, and higher-grade calendered vinyl will use a polymeric plasticizer.

3M™ Series 50 Calendered Graphics Film

3M™ Scotchcal™ Series 50 Craft Vinyl films are general-purpose, opaque vinyl specially developed for knife cutting on electronic vinyl cutters like Cricut and Silhouette machines. Because Series 50 films are intermediate and calendered films, they are more cost-effective for use in schools, offices and crafting projects.

With a clear, pressure-sensitive adhesive that features a blue liner on the white films and a white liner on all other film colors, you'll love the easy-weed performance of this versatile film in both indoor and outdoor applications. Series 50 films are removable with heat for up to three years and permanent for up to five years of use.

As these films consist of calendered vinyl, they'll come with several benefits. For one, the thick vinyl film will make it relatively easy to handle for those who are completing a DIY project. Additionally, it offers high-quality performance on flat surfaces and on moderate curves. Due to the manufacturing process, it's more cost-effective than cast film. Along with its performance, handling and cost, the film sets itself apart by being highly resistant to abrasion.

3M™ 7125 Scotchcal™ Electrocut Vinyl

When you need a high-performance craft vinyl look no further than the gold-standard of vinyl films and put your trust in 3M™. The 3M™ 7125 Scotchcal™ Electrocut Vinyl is two mils thick rated for seven-year durability and has a high-gloss finish. It's also available in a wide variety of solid colors, giving you the ability to personalize the vinyl and have it meet your exact needs. You'll love the look and performance of this vinyl film.

As the 7125 is one of the highest-performance vinyl films on the market today, you might wonder why you should be using it in your crafts, decals, labels and graphics. Even though intermediate-quality vinyl, like Series 50, are now glossier and last longer than they did in the past, it doesn't mean they have replaced high-performance vinyl. If you have a project that requires conformability over uneven surfaces, you need high-performance craft vinyl made with thinner gauges.

Due to its manufacturing process, this type of film shrinks less than calendered films and doesn't fade as fast. Additionally, the durability is higher than calendered vinyl due to the top-quality raw materials and plasticizers used in the manufacturing process. The materials and the manufacturing process ensures that cast films will retain their color and other graphic properties over time.

Finally, there are a lot more colors available in cast vinyl because of their small-batch manufacture, allowing you to have much more freedom in your design. If you want your crafting projects to last in the classroom, home or office for years to come, be sure to choose a premium quality, cast craft vinyl like the 3M™ 7125.

3m craft vinyl colors

Different Styles

Both the Series 50 and the Series 7125 come in a variety of styles that enable you to personalize any surface. The Series 7125 offers superior color options, with 84 colors that include metallics available for users to choose from. Some of these colors include apple green, harvest gold, indigo, sunflower and tomato red. Additionally, the Series 50 is available in 28 colors, including burgundy, dark green, lemon yellow, sapphire and teal, to name only a few.

With all of these colors available, it's easy to customize the appearance of any of the films. Another way you can personalize your 3M™ Craft Vinyl is by cutting and weeding it. The Series 7125 makes it easy for you with a lay-flat paper liner. If you're more interested in the Series 50, you'll be happy to know it is a cinch to cut and weed, and it even offers removable adhesive to quickly switch out the vinyl if you'd like to change your look.

You can also adjust the opacity of both films to your needs. If you require a film that doesn't allow any sight past it, you can get a totally opaque film made, but if you want to have a transparent film, you can find one that offers transparency as well. For example, if you want to include graphics on a window, but still let natural light into your building, a transparent film lets you spread your message without losing natural lights.

In addition to the opacity of the film, you can also adjust the size of the vinyl to meet your exact needs. Both series range from 24" x 12" up to 24" x 50 yards.

Whether you choose to create one-of-a-kind designs or find them on Pinterest, you'll love the way your graphics will stand out with craft vinyl. Customized mugs and glasses are awesome as office decor, party favors, teacher appreciation gifts or just as a way to dress up your boring water cup.

2. Pantry and Storage Labels

Whether it's on your Ikea shelving unit or plastic file crates, you can quickly and easily create order from chaos with cut vinyl labels. To provide the most visual order to a storage area, top organizers will use craft vinyl's ability to take on a variety of colors and styles to give each section a unique feel.

3. Antique and Salvaged Wood Decals

Artwork for your home can be costly, and if you cruise garage sales and antique shops looking for wooden signs with custom decals, you'll soon realize almost none of them say exactly what you want them to. Instead of searching for a custom wooden sign, you can make one yourself using a cutting machine and 3M™ crafting vinyl. Create the text, seal the wood to your liking, then apply the graphic in colors that fit your home perfectly.

4. Door Decals for Kids

If you have children, you'll love the way you can use the Series 50 to create creative door decals with their names. Let them choose the font and add any designs or flair you can think of. They'll love the chance to bond with you and show off their personalities with the custom decals they choose for their doors.

5. Window Decals

The great part about window decals is that you can use them for a variety of personal and professional purposes. Got a home-based business and want to advertise it? You can craft a window decal using Series 50 or 3M™ 7125 that gives your home office a feeling of professionalism that will be sure to impress clients coming to your home for a meeting.

If you own a store that has a lot of foot traffic passing by, you can use a window decal to display your newest sales to draw in potential customers. For personal use, craft vinyl can create window decals for vehicles that show off a special message, such as one about your honor student or your support for the local football team.

I recently used this white 3M reflective vinyl for a craft project, and I couldn't be happier with the results. It is a little hard to dial in the settings for my Cricut so just make sure you test first!

After working for a sign company for 38 years, buying 3M vinyl was a no brainer. You can’t get a better quality vinyl. Although I have never used 3M 50 before it works just like the 3 M#3650.
