Under normal environmental conditions, the film is rated for an expected performance life of 8 years when applied to a flat, vertical, outdoor surface. For the easiest and cleanest removal, professional removal within the warranty period is strongly recommended.

Does the High Gloss finish show surface imperfections like orange peel? +

Yes — because of its intense reflectivity, the 3M 2080 High Gloss finish will magnify any imperfections already present in the underlying paint, including orange peel texture, scratches, dents, pitting, and fisheyes. This is an important consideration that does not apply to matte or satin finishes to the same degree. 3M recommends that a professional paint correction be performed before installing any High Gloss film on a vehicle with heavy orange peel. How do I care for and clean a High Gloss wrap? +

High Gloss wraps require careful maintenance to preserve their mirror-like finish. Always hand wash using a cleaner designed for high-quality painted surfaces — it should be wet, non-abrasive, solvent-free, and have a pH value between 3 and 11. Never scrub the film, as scratches and abrasion marks can be permanent on a high gloss surface. Automatic car washes with brushes should be avoided entirely, as they are especially damaging to High Gloss films. Clean off fuel spills, bird droppings, and tree sap promptly, and avoid parking near shrubs or trees that could cause surface scratches. Touchless car washes are the safest automated option.

What is the protective film layer on High Gloss films and when should it be removed? +

Every roll of 3M 2080 High Gloss film ships with a conformable protective film layer on its surface. This layer is designed to reduce surface impressions and increase scratch resistance throughout the entire installation process, allowing installers to work on complex, curved surfaces without damaging the film. The protective layer should remain on the film for the full duration of the installation. It must be removed before post-heating the film, and it must also be removed before applying any overlaminate. The protective film is classified as recyclable plastic Number 4 — check with your local waste authority for available recycling programs.

Will 3M 2080 High Gloss wrap damage my car's original paint? +

No. When properly applied to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) paint in good condition, 3M 2080 High Gloss wrap film will not damage the underlying paint upon removal. In fact, the film acts as a protective barrier, shielding your vehicle's factory finish from minor scratches, UV exposure, and road debris during the time it is applied. This helps preserve the resale value of the vehicle. For the cleanest removal, it is recommended to have the wrap professionally removed within the 8-year warranty period using heat and, if necessary, approved removal chemicals.

Can 3M 2080 High Gloss be applied to any vehicle surface? +

3M 2080 High Gloss is engineered to conform to flat surfaces, simple curves, compound curves, deep channels, corrugations, and concave surfaces. It is compatible with aluminium, chrome, ABS plastic, and painted substrates. Application onto glass is possible but carries a risk of glass breakage due to uneven heat absorption from sun exposure — 3M is not liable for glass breakage in these cases. Powder-coated and water-based paints should be tested for adhesion before committing to a full installation. The film must always be applied to a clean, fully cured, and structurally sound surface for best results and warranty eligibility.

Does 3M 2080 High Gloss have a directional characteristic? +

No. Unlike the metallic, pearl, textured, and color flip finishes in the 3M 2080 series — which carry directional arrows on their liner to ensure consistent panel orientation — High Gloss films do not have a directional characteristic. There are no directional arrows on the liner of any 3M 2080 High Gloss roll. However, for the most consistent color appearance across an entire vehicle, 3M recommends using film from the same lot number, production date, and manufacturing site throughout the job, as color can vary slightly from lot to lot.

First time DIYer - Satin black for the win!

First time DIYer and thought I would try wrapping the roof of my 2018 Forester XT. I chose Satin black as the vehicle is a dark grey. The selection was perfect and the application took me some time, but I'm happy with the results. Great vinyl for the price

Great Wrap

It was my first time wrapping, and I had to purchase another piece since I made a mistake, but it was simple and well worth the effort.

Great quality

Wrapped the hood and trunk of a c6 corvette and couldn’t have been happier with the install. Material worked great and the finish product with the metallic flake looked amazing.

Piano Black Gloss

For my particular project, this vinyl is perfect: I have a white piano shell that I use for my live keyboard gigs which I’m transforming into a classic black piano polish. This vinyl is perfect for giving it that classic piano black gloss look. I recommend watching the installation videos on how to apply this vinyl but otherwise installation is easy with the proper tools.

In the picture attached you can see the white piano legs that I’ve been vinyl wrapping - the bottom one is of course the one I finished vinyl wrapping. There are some finger prints from handling it but those can be polished off. The top leg is the white one I still need to wrap. And I’ve placed both of those legs on top of an actual black polished baby grand piano to show the comparison.
