Discover the Beauty of Satin

Experience the unique aesthetic of the 3m Satin Dark Gray vinyl wrap, a finish that stands in a class of its own. Unlike the total light absorption of a matte or the mirror-like shine of a gloss, the satin finish provides a subtle, elegant luster that gracefully highlights your vehicle’s body lines. This film is not just about looks; it’s about performance. The 2080 Series features a dual-cast construction that ensures exceptional durability and conformability, allowing the film to hug every curve and contour with precision. And with 3M’s advanced Controltac™ and Comply™ adhesive technologies, installation is a breeze, providing a bubble-free finish every time. Note that as a satin film, it does not include a protective cap layer, so extra care is needed during installation to preserve its flawless surface.

Key Features

This premium film is packed with features designed for a flawless finish and long-lasting performance. The Satin Dark Gray offers a true low-sheen luster that is both elegant and easy to maintain, as it is less prone to showing fingerprints and minor imperfections than a high-gloss finish. The dual-cast construction ensures that the film won’t shrink or deform over time, providing a stable and reliable application. 3M’s patented Controltac™ technology allows you to slide and reposition the film until you find the perfect alignment, while the Comply™ adhesive features microscopic air-release channels that make it easy to achieve a bubble-free result. With an outdoor durability rating of up to eight years and excellent UV resistance, this film is built to last. The 60-inch roll width allows for seamless coverage on large body panels, minimizing seams for a clean, professional look. And when it’s time for a change, the film can be safely removed without damaging the underlying paint.

Frequently Asked 3M Satin Dark Gray Wraps Questions

Have a Question? We’ve Got the Answer!

What is the difference between Satin Dark Gray and Matte Dark Gray?

The primary difference is the finish. Satin Dark Gray (S261) has a subtle, low-sheen luster that reflects a small amount of light, giving it a smooth, elegant appearance. Matte Dark Gray (M261) is completely flat and non-reflective, absorbing light for a more aggressive, stealthy look. Satin is often described as being between matte and gloss.

Does a satin finish show fingerprints and dirt easily?

Satin finishes are generally more forgiving than matte finishes when it comes to showing fingerprints and oils. While they are not as effective at hiding dirt as a gloss finish, the low-sheen surface helps to mask minor imperfections and dust better than a completely flat matte surface, making it a great balance between aesthetics and ease of maintenance.

Is the 3M 2080 Satin Dark Gray wrap difficult to install?

Thanks to 3M’s Controltac™ and Comply™ technologies, the 2080 Series is one of the most user-friendly films on the market. However, because satin films like S261 do not have a protective cap layer, extra care must be taken during installation to avoid scratching the surface with a squeegee. For beginners, it is recommended to use a high-quality squeegee with a soft buffer and to practice on a small area first.

How do I care for a satin vinyl wrap?

Caring for a satin wrap is relatively simple. It is best to hand wash the vehicle using a pH-neutral soap and a soft microfiber wash mitt. Avoid automatic car washes with brushes, as they can scratch the film. Also, never use wax, polish, or any abrasive compounds on a satin finish, as this can create shiny spots and ruin the low-sheen luster. For tough spots like bird droppings or bug splatter, use a 50/50 solution of isopropyl alcohol and water.

How much does it cost to wrap a car in Satin Dark Gray?

The cost can vary depending on the size of the vehicle and the complexity of the installation. For a professional installation, you can expect to pay between $3,000 and $7,000. The material cost for a full roll of 3M 2080 Satin Dark Gray is typically around $860. While a DIY installation can save money, it requires patience, skill, and the right tools to achieve a professional result.

First Time DIY Wrapper

First time vinyl wrapping. Wrapped interior trim of my BMW 328i E92. Had quite a few "do overs" of a few pieces. Corners were most difficult for me to master and make trim look good. In the end, I recommend giving it a try. The 3M 2080 is easy to work with once you get the hang of how much heat to use and streatching the material can tolerate before tearing. Pro Tip - buy extra.... :)

Thanks so much for sharing your experience, Rob!

It’s awesome to hear you took on your first DIY wrap and stuck with it—even through the learning curve. You’re absolutely right: once you get a feel for the right amount of heat and stretch, 3M™ 2080 really starts to shine. And that pro tip is spot on—having extra material on hand makes all the difference, especially for those tricky corners.

Your BMW interior sounds like a great project to start with, and we’re glad to hear it turned out well in the end. Appreciate you recommending others give it a try!

I love the material

I recently wrapped my car but not happy with how it turned out. So I ordered a similar wrap through Rvinyl and started to re-wrap my car. I've only done one section of the car. But I love the material that I ordered. It's very easy to handle. It applies with no issues. I can't wait to finish the rest of the car and plan to order more wrap material so I can wrap my truck next. Keep up the good work.

Mighty tasty!

I love this color, it’s so striking!

I wrapped different console pieces and button covers. I also wrapped my door’s window control panels and the trim around the stereo.

What I really like about this color is how it’s so bright and brilliant in the light, and in dim lighting it’s very dark, almost black.

I recently ordered more and trimmed the edges of my front splitter and the rear diffuser fins, on a black car, it looks really nice!

It’s pretty good

Shipping was pretty quick, no complaints there. A far as the actual vinyl my only complaint is that it shrinks a little more than I expected in hot weather. Installation is great, it stretches good under a heat gun and doesn’t tear as easily as other vinyls. You can also reposition it a lot of times before it loses its adhesion which is really nice.

Sophistication in Satin

Wrapping my client's 2019 Ferrari 812 Superfast in 3M satin black vinyl was a game-changer. The material's high quality and ease of application made the process a joy. The sleek satin finish transformed the car's aesthetic, adding a touch of sophistication. No bubbles or imperfections were visible, showcasing the precision of the wrap. It endures daily wear impressively, and the bold black hue turns heads wherever I go. Overall, a stellar investment for elevating the look of this luxury vehicle.

Satin Dark Grey

First time wrapper, necessary because I couldn’t find an installer willing to wrap my motorcycle for less than $900. Installation was definitely a challenge, but the product is very good. Any small mistakes in the installation were my fault as an inexperienced installer, as the material was very forgiving. Couldn’t be happier with the overall results! Ended up buying a bit more in satin white aluminum to add cutouts.

1988 Pontiac Fiero Formula

This is the first wrap I've ever done and I'll say it's probably the only way I'll ever refinish a vehicle on my own again. It came out BEAUTIFUL and I don't have ideal conditions to work in. No garage so out in the yard is my shop. It is EASY to install once you get the hang of how it behaves on different surfaces and contours and once you get a feel for its stretch limits and all. I got better at it as I worked my way around the car. This is another advantage. You can stop when you have to and start again when you can. Unlike with painting. My only trouble besides my learning curve is how to wrap some of the deep recesses on the Fiero like the turn signals on the front and rear bumpers. I may try to color match the film with paint for those small areas. Of course the better the surface prep the better the finish. Mine was mostly loose and powdery original clear coat on the hood, roof and deck lid/wing and the tops of the fenders. You can see where I did a better or worse job at prep in those areas. I would have been happy if it came out a fifty footer but I LOVE it and it is a real attention getter.
