Amboyna Burlwood Vinyl Wraps

When you want the naturalistic look of wood grain print but don't want to contribute to deforestation then you will want our Rwraps™ Wood Grain Amboyna Burlwood wraps. Taking its name from Ambon Island in Indonesia, where much of the fabled wood is believed to have been initially exported, Amboyna is among the most expensive and sought-after of all burls. Although some pureveyors differentiate between “Red Amboyna” with the typical rich reddish brown heartwood, or “Golden Amboyna” for pieces with lighter yellowish brown coloration, it's s not unusual for pieces to contain sharply contrasting yellowish sapwood. Real Amboyna is commonly used for fine furniture, turned objects, electric guitar tops, knife or gun grips, and other small specialty wood items and you can use our wraps on virtually all of these items and more. Also perfect for usage on your car, truck, or SUV's exterior as well as on its interior trim this wrapping film is ideally suited for use on any hard, non-porous surface. From the Forest to the Urban Jungle

Whether you live in cabin in the forest or a New York penthouse, the textured-look of our Wood Grain vinyl will always be in style. Made just for you, the DIY installer, this Rwraps™ Wood Grain vinyl is sold by the foot in lengths of up to ten yards and in three convenient widths (12, 24, or 59-inches) so you never end up with more than you need. Featuring AirTec air-drain adhesives, you get bubble-free results each and every time you use it. No fooling around with harsh chemicals, messy slip solutions, and sticky glues. Just clean the surface, heat the film, squeegee it on, and trim away the excess. Fast, simple, and painless - just the way we like it!

Measuring Your Wood Grain Amboyna Burlwood Wrap

As you may have noticed above, we have taken the time to show you the scale of the pattern of this film. The image with the man (or woman, we're not sexist) shows how the Wood Grain print looks in a 59" (approximately 5 feet) by 72" (6 feet) sheet. The image is to scale so it should be helpful in determining how the print will look on your car, truck, motorcycle, or anything else you decide to wrap. Please note, however, that the entire pattern is not visible here (in other words, the repeating Orion's Belt pattern is much larger than 5 by 6 feet so you won't necessarily get what is shown).

The 12 by 12-inch tile shows you how you can expect the wrap to look on smaller applications like Amboyna Burlwood wraps or skateboards. Again, not every one foot square section will have this exact part of the pattern but it should give you a general idea of what to expect.

Shiny or Subtle, It's Your Choice

All of our Rwraps™ 914 Series films come with a gloss laminate as the default choice. But, since we're all about aesthetic customization, you get the final say. Choose from Gloss, Matte or even No Laminate on your Amboyna Burlwood wrap.

Please note that lamination increases the life of your wrap (this applies equally to gloss or matte laminates) and should always be selected for outdoor applications. Unlaminated wraps are only recommended for low traffic, indoor use.

Made for Makers

The popularity of our Wood Grain film  doesn't appear to be waning and you guys are constantly coming up with novel uses for them. These wraps were originally designed with vehicles in mind but you can use them on any hard, non-porous surface you can imagine. No need for messy primers or additional fluids, simply clean the surface of whatever you want to wrap and apply. Use a razor to cut away any excess film and you're done. What could be easier or better looking?

We’re glad to hear you were happy with the quality, and we truly appreciate you sharing a photo of the finished project. It came out great!

Thanks again for choosing Rvinyl.

Good for price

For ~$30 the product I got was pretty good. Installed by myself for the first time and it went well.

Rwraps™ Wood Grain Vinyl Wrap Film - Cherry

The pattern is offset and doesn't match at all where it was looped in the printing process. Makes the job look tacky and amateurish. No sense trying to install vinyl in one piece, when it looks like that anyway. On a 5 yard roll, I had 3 pattern mismatches, all looking like the photo. Definitely not worth the money.

Great Product for Station Wagons

I just finished installing on my Ford Country Squire. I am very satisfied with the product. Application was reasonably simply for a new vinyl user like me. This is a cast vinyl, perfect for the automotive use. No adhesion issues and easy to work around curves in the body. I would purchase this again for another project. Customer service is also great!

Wood Grain Vinyl Wrap Film

I am a 92 year old amateur do-it-your-selfer with an '89 Buick Century "woody" station wagon. The factory vinyl wood grain had deteriorated badly and was an embarrassment, so I figured I'd give your Rvinyl a try on the worst side of the car. I was concerned about problems with applying the film on the compound curve around the flared wheelwell openings and was prepared to use a heat gun to help the film apply. To my delight , using a squeegy and care, it went on beautifully with no heat. Your wood grain pattern is more pronounced than the factory's but more subdued than the oak flooring in my house. I'd say it's just right for a car. I wasn't really planning to do the other side because it wasn't so faded, but the "bad" side now looked so good and the film went on so easily I ordered some more and did the rest of the panels.

People have commented that my 35 year old woody now looks like a new car !

First Time user on boat interior cabinets and walls. Bringing new life to a 1998 40' SeaRay

I learned quickly that the product likes to be warm. I struggled with smoothing out wrinkles when it was 64 degrees. The next install was in 75 degrees and it laid out very easily.

I am working on the easy part first, the cabinet doors. The area I will tackle next is on the interior walls with curves and tight corners so I am expecting a challenge but the more I work with the product the more I understand it.

A suggestion that would help using grain patterns would be on the backing paper. It is difficult keeping the grain straight on the front. Markings on the backing paper, like is on Christmas wrapping paper, would really help. Straight lines or blocks.

Hello, I restore Wurlitzer Jukeboxes from the 1940’s. The Amboyna what I’m looking for. I need 59” by 2 feet.will that size look like the sample on your website or will the pattern stretch out

Rvinyl

Hello Jay

Thank you for your question!

Yes, the pattern on the 59" × 2 ft piece will maintain the same scale as shown on our website—it will not be stretched. We also have a scale diagram available that shows the actual pattern repeat, which can help you visualize how the Amboyna Burlwood grain will look at full size.

Your Wurlitzer restoration sounds like a fantastic project, and Amboyna Burlwood is a beautiful choice for recreating that classic look. If you have any other questions about sizing or the material, we're happy to help!

Do you guys offer any material that can be applied to mdf or Masonite wood with contact adhesive? I make custom interior panels and would like to do some wood grain inserts.

Rvinyl

Hi Shawn,

Yes! Our Rwraps™ Wood Grain Vinyl Wrap Films, including the Amboyna Burlwood, are designed to adhere very well to smooth surfaces like MDF and Masonite.

They feature a pressure-sensitive adhesive backing, so you typically do not need a separate contact adhesive. In fact, using additional adhesive is not recommended, as it can interfere with proper bonding and repositionability.

For best results:

Ensure the surface is smooth, clean, and sealed (MDF especially should be primed or sealed first)
Light sanding and cleaning will improve adhesion
Use heat during installation to help the film conform and bond properly

We also recommend doing a test with a small piece first, as there are a variety of MDF types that can affect adhesion, including:

Standard MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF (MR MDF)
Fire-retardant MDF
Ultra-light MDF
High-density MDF (HDF)

If you're producing custom interior panels, these films are a great choice for achieving a realistic wood grain finish with less mess and more consistency than traditional veneers.

If you have specific durability or finish requirements, feel free to reach out—we’re happy to help guide you to the best option.
