What Is a Door Wrap?

Door Wraps are sheets of vinyl that closely adhere to your Doors like a second skin. Think of them like a giant sticker that covers the entirety of the surface, transforming its appearance in terms of both color and texture. But instead of the small stickers you might find peeling off of a child's homework, think of these as more like the stickers you might see on someone's car bumper.

These Door wraps are durable, sturdy and built to last. Most importantly, they can transform a tired old Door into something new and unique.

What Are the Advantages of Door Wraps?

Why should you choose a Door wrap, as opposed to giving in and replacing your entire door, window or garage doors? What benefits can door wraps offer that replacements can't? As it turns out, there's a whole list of the perks to choosing these wraps and here are three of them.

1. Customization

Replacing your door is a momentous occasion. It costs a lot of money, and it's also a significant manual effort. You'll need to get it delivered, most likely, and that's an additional cost on top of the base value. Because of this, choosing your new door is a weighty decision. Whatever model you select will be in your home for decades to come, meaning you'll need to make a smart choice. If you're like many of us, this pressure may tempt you to pick the most neutral, vanilla door you can find the one that has the best chance of aging well  as opposed to choosing the style you've really got your eye on.

Vinyl wraps give you the freedom to explore and customize in a way you can't with a replacement door or trim. These stickers are far more affordable than a new casement or door, meaning there's less pressure to make the perfect decision and more freedom to try something new. With vinyl, you can try out one wrap this year, then change it up next year with a new one. This level of flexibility is impossible to beat, and once you've gotten used to it, it's hard to go back to anything else.

2. Cost

You may not realize it but doors can add significantly to the cost of any home redesign or decoration. Even if you choose one of the cheaper models out there, it will still take a large bite out of your budget and that doesn't even include the price of delivery, the labor costs for the installation professionals and the potential cost of disposing of the old door. In fact, a standard interior door costs about $75 to $125 while exterior doors cost an average of $500 to $2,000 with some installations exceeding $10,000. Once you realize all the different factors at play, it's clear that replacing your door is an expensive operation even under the best of circumstances.

Next to this, vinyl is so much more affordable that there's no comparison. You can easily buy many different unique wraps for your doors or window for less than the cost of one single replacement. You also won't have to worry about getting rid of an old door, paying for delivery or getting it installed. If you're looking to save while still getting the home upgrade you've been looking for, vinyl door wraps are the way to go.

3. Convenience

We've talked about how expensive it is to replace your Door, but it's also worth talking about what a pain it usually is. In the case of an exterior door, you'll have to block out time to ensure you ccan remove the old one and install the new one all at one go. Next, you'll have to figure out how to dispose of it since most municipal garbage pickups won't take it with your normal garbage

Adding a vinyl Door wrap is hassle-free. You don't need to rearrange your schedule or worry about installation and disposal. All of these things make a hassle and disturbance-free door upgrade, vinyl wraps beat full replacements every time.

Why Do People Wrap Their Doors?

People may choose to wrap their doors for a long list of reasons. The most common reasons are the ones we've discussed here - the incredible price savings, the minimal hassle involved and the wide range of freedom to choose whatever design and style you want.

People might choose to wrap their Doors because they're saving for a more significant purchase down the line, or because they're working from a small- to mid-sized income and aren't ready to drop too much money on a new Door just yet. They might also decide to go with a vinyl wrap because they want the option to change up their style whenever the urge strikes, instead of having to wait a decade for a new Door. Or, they may just be intimidated by the enormous process of replacing their old Door and see this as an easier alternative.

Aside from factors like convenience and pricing, vinyl wraps are also transforming your Door in ways a Door replacement can't. If you're looking for something like a camouflage Door, for example, you won't find that in stores. You can only find this level of customizability and creativity with vinyl wraps.

Types of Door Wraps

As you begin to browse for a vinyl Door wrap of your own, you'll quickly notice that while there's a wide range of different styles and designs out there, they all broadly fall into several different categories. If you're overwhelmed by the incredible number of choices, narrowing it down to these categories can be a helpful way to start the decision-making process.

By looking at just these three categories, you can pick the type you most like rather than having to go through every single design out there and eliminate the ones that just aren't doing it for you.

1. Graphic Vinyl Wraps

In a way, every Door wrap is graphic. They're all colored and textured and could be considered graphic. What we mean by this category, however, is that the wraps have a picture on them, or are designed to imitate another real-life object. Maybe they transform your Door into a vending machine or a phone box, or maybe they're just covered in a repeating pattern of stripes, plaid or skulls and crossbones. All of these fall into the graphic category.

2. Metallic Vinyl Wraps

These Door wraps are one solid color, meaning there are no designs or patterns. What really sets them apart, however, is the metallic sheen they bring to your kitchen. These metallic wraps will often mimic a specific metal or material, such as chrome or stainless steel or they may simply be a reflective and glossy surface. If it's a solid color that has that distinctive shine to it, it's a metallic wrap.

3. Matte & Gloss Vinyl Wraps

Matte and gloss door sticker wraps are also a single solid color. Unlike metallic wraps though, these are single, solid colors without a texture or flake. They can come in any color of the rainbow, but their unifying characteristic is their color. Choose bright, pastels for a Mediterranean or Caribbean feel or go for darker hues for modern and minimalist styles.

What Size Doors Can You Wrap?

Every Door will be a tiny bit different, but most Doors fall into a variety of sizes but can generlly be clssified as exterior, interior and garage doors. You can wrap all of these without any problems. The key to purchasing the right amount of wrap to cover a Door, no matter what size it is, is to know the standard dimensions. While there are always slight variations, the typical dimensions are:

  • Exterior Doors: The standard size for an exterior door is 80 inches by 36 inches which is 6 ft, 8 inches by 3 ft. 96 inches or 8 ft. is now very common for newer homes and stock exterior doors are also commonly available in 30 and 32-inch widths.
  • Interior Doors: The height for all passage doors must be a minimum of 80 inches and the standard width sizes for interior doors are 24”, 28”, 30”, 32” and 36”. The minimum recommended door width to allow persons with disabilities' to pass through is 36 inches.
  • Garage Doors: The standard size for double garage doors is 16 feet wide and 7 to 8 feet high. Many 16 x 7 garage doors will be designed with a pair of single 8-foot garage door bays, separated by a central post or column.

How Much Vinyl Do You Need to Wrap Your Door?

All Doors are different but we've covered the most common sizes and configurations here. FAQs

Vinyl Door wraps sound great, but you've still got questions. Have you been wondering any of these three frequently asked questions about Door wraps? Get your answers now.

1. Are These Wraps Just for Doors?

You can use vinyl wraps on any hard surface, such as a door, a cabinet or a bookcase. These specific products featured here are intended for Doors, but there are plenty of other vinyl products for all your other redecorating needs that will be perfect for other places in your house.

2. How Do I Use a Vinyl Wrap on My Door?

The best part about these vinyl wraps is how easy they are to apply.

Start by cleaning the surface with paper towels and a general cleaner before lining up your sheet of vinyl across the front of the Door and taping it down on either side. Trim off the extra vinyl from the bottom you won't need and add a long strip of tape across the middle of the vinyl to hold it in place while you work. Peel the backing away from the top half of the vinyl and press it into place firmly with your hands first and a squeegee second before repeating this process with the bottom half. Remove the tape and trim off extra material around the edges, and you'll be all set.
