Chrome Delete Wraps

Is your vehicle covered in chrome details that don't fit your desired aesthetic? The easiest way to achieve a look you prefer is to use chrome delete vinyl wraps. They're quick and easy to apply, so within minutes, you can have a finished look tailored to your taste. Continue reading to learn all about chrome delete wraps — what they are, why you might want to use them and what options are available.

What is a Chrome Delete Anyway?

To put it simply, a chrome delete is any vinyl wrap that let's you hide — or delete — the chrome trim that so many car manufacturers insist on putting around windows, on grilles and just about anywhere they can think of. And, while some people are still trying to find more ways to add chrome trim, most of us have entered and embraced more21st-century aesthetics.

In other words, we don't want chrome fins on our Honda, Ford or Toyota. Instead, what most of us are looking for is a more subtle style rather than bright, shiny and reflective chrome. That's where chrome delete wraps come into play.

De-Chrome Your Ride

The most common choices when people look to “de-chrome” their rides are Matte Black and Gloss Black. These choices work especially well for those who have factory black paint jobs and are intent on getting that “murdered-out” or blackout look. Even if your car, truck or SUV isn’t black, you can still get an almost-OEM look by choosing Rwraps™ Matte Black or 3M™ Series 2080 Satin Black films.

3m chrome delete

These vinyl wraps give you the look of the rubberized trim that Gloss Black vinyl just can’t. And, of course, there’s always PlastiDip too, although using a spray or paint on dip can be messy at best and pales in comparison to 3M™ and Rwraps™ in terms of durability.

benefits of chrome delete

Why Use Chrome Delete?

You might want to use chrome blackout vinyl wraps for a few different aesthetic reasons. For black cars, chrome delete wraps complete a sleek, blacked-out look. It pulls the focus back to the body lines, shape and color depth. It can modernize the look of almost any vehicle. Whether you prefer a gloss, satin or matte finish, you can use chrome delete to improve the look of your vehicle.

Beyond changing the factory appearance of your vehicle, you might also choose to use chrome delete to hide damage, which can instantly improve your car’s appearance.

Wraps vs. Plasti-Dip

It’s best to use either 3M™ or Rwraps™ for chrome delete. These are the most durable, clean and effective options. They’re quick to apply and will leave you with a sleek aesthetic. There are a few reasons you’ll want to choose these wraps over other techniques:

Why Use Rwraps™?

Rwraps™ Pillar Post Trim Wraps offer versatility and affordability. The dual-cast high-quality vinyl wraps come in dozens of colors and finishes so you can achieve the exact look you want. All you have to do is clean, prep, peel and apply - you can cover any area you want within minutes.

The pressure-sensitive film has air-release adhesives, so the results are always bubble-free. We design it to be easily removable without damage, so you can swap it out if you change your mind. Rwraps™ apply like decal stickers but are much more durable and long-lasting.

Why Use 3M™?

The 3M™ 1080 Series Pillar Post Trim Wraps are another great option for chrome delete. They’re also made of high-quality dual-cast vinyl and result in an impeccable, bubble-free finish. For your 3M™ chrome delete, you can choose from different finishes, including:

  • Gloss
  • Matte
  • Satin
  • Carbon fiber
  • Brushed steel

The pressure-sensitive adhesive is easy to apply. Although it’s semi-permanent, you can remove it whenever you like without causing damage. Since it comes in 60-inch rolls, your chrome delete wraps will be seamless and smooth in appearance.

plasti dip

What About Plasti-Dip?

Another option for your chrome delete is Plasti-Dip, which is an air-dry rubberized coating. You can use a standard spray gun to apply it or paint it on. As you can imagine, it’s often a messy job. If you’re not a professional, you’ll likely need to take your vehicle into a shop for the application process, which can make it more time-consuming and expensive than a vinyl wrap. It also requires multiple coats, whereas vinyl wraps are a simple one-and-done process.

Additionally, Plasti-Dip is not as durable as a vinyl wrap. Vinyl is resilient, resistant to tears and cracks, which is what makes it such a popular material in many different uses and industries. In order for a Plasti-Dip to have a comparable durability level, you’ll have to apply supplemental products like ultraviolet (UV) and gasoline protective coatings. Environmental factors can degrade the Plasti-Dip outer layer, so you’ll have to wash your vehicle anytime something as common as a bird dropping lands on it.

Another crucial factor in your decision is the appearance - while Plasti-Dip is limited to matte finishes, you can choose from a wide range of finish qualities for your vinyl wraps. If you want your chrome delete in a glossy or metallic finish, vinyl is the way to go.

For these reasons, vinyl wraps are the clear choice for your chrome delete project. They’re quicker and easier to apply, offer better durability and tend to last longer. It’s also easier to replace a damaged section of vinyl wrap if needed - vinyl wraps are removable, which also means you can return your car to its factory form whenever you need to.

Benefits of Using Chrome Delete

You can achieve a lot with a simple roll of chrome delete vinyl wrapping. You can use chrome delete kits to accentuate your vehicle’s trim with a pop of pattern or color. Or, you can use it to create a more cohesive and sleek look by matching it to your paint job. Some of the benefits of using vinyl wraps for chrome delete are:

  • Plenty of choices: Vinyl gives you a wide range of choices for the color and finish you prefer. No matter how you want to cover up your vehicle’s chrome features, you can achieve it with vinyl wrapping.
  • Easy application: In addition, vinyl is quick and easy to apply. Within minutes, you’ll be able to achieve the look you prefer.
  • Durability: The vinyl wrap will be able to withstand a lot. It’s highly durable and will last years without fading or delaminating.
  • Semi-permanent: As quick as vinyl is to apply, it will last a long time. It’s made to be semi-permanent and should last for several years. Other solutions like Plasti-Dip will not last nearly as long.
  • Easy removal: If you change your mind about the chrome delete you choose, or if you want to return your vehicle to factory appearance for resale, it’s easy enough to remove the vinyl without leaving behind damage.

Where Can You Use Chrome Delete?

You can apply vinyl to cover up chrome detailing just about anywhere on your vehicle. Here are a few of the places where you might want to use chrome delete:

Window Trim and Pillars

One of the most popular places to apply chrome delete is window trim. Whether it’s the B-pillars or the chrome gasket trim around the rear windshield, there’s a whole lot of shiny chrome around most auto glass. Why? We’re not sure, but since paints and dips can easily ruin the glass, there’s almost no better option to upgrade your ride than with chrome delete vinyl wraps.

pillar trim chrome delete

Since these chrome details are so close to the glass, chrome delete vinyl is the safest option - paints and dips are much messier and you might end up ruining your glass as you try to apply them. You can also use chrome delete on your vehicle’s pillars, the vertical lines between each window, since they’re close to the glass, as well.

When it comes to window trim, most people use Matte, Satin or Gloss Black vinyl for the window trim. With that said, there’s no reason you couldn’t use whichever color or pattern you prefer, such as the 3M™ Series 2080 Black Carbon Fiber. If you want your window trim to stand out, you can choose something fun. In addition to carbon fiber wraps, we’d also recommend our Rwraps® Matte Chrome wraps to give you an exotic but understated touch of color that can accentuate the trim or match the overall theme.

Bumpers

If you’re not a fan of chrome detailing on your bumpers, you’re not alone! Lots of people use a vinyl wrap to cover the chrome on their bumpers. You can use ORACAL® 970RA and 975 Structure Cast Bumper Wraps for a specialized bumper cover. These bumper wraps come in over 130 different styles, allowing for total customization. It’s super durable and conforms to the complex shape of your bumper. It’s quick to adhere and easy to remove if needed.

Light Bezels and Headlight Rings

Your vehicle’s light bezels, the rings around the light fixtures, frame and protect your lights. They’re another detail that manufacturers often chrome up. Companies like Lund, AVS, Putco and American Car Craft actually make aftermarket chrome rings for your head and taillights. To complete the sleek look you’re going for, you might want to use chrome delete on your light bezels. In this case, you simply can’t afford to go with paint or sprays because you run the very real risk of ruining your expensive composite lenses.

While you’re at it, you could also apply a headlight cover, which will enhance and protect your headlights. Tint covers are one of those fine details that pull together the customized look of your vehicle.

Interior Trim

Chrome details might have made their way inside your vehicle as well as outside. For a completely personalized and stylized ride, you’ll want to apply vinyl covers to your internal trim. For a black carbon fiber look with a textured finish and semi-gloss shine, use Avery Dennison™ SW900 Supreme Wrapping Film.

You can also use custom dash kits to achieve the exact look you prefer. You’ll be able to bring your desired color, pattern or texture to life with this interior accessory. Over a hundred different colors and finishes are available, including realistic woodgrain finishes in a range of hues and grain designs.

Mirrors

Mirrors are another fine detail that makes all the difference. If you’re going to chrome delete your exterior, remember the mirrors! For the right cut shape and easier application, choose 3M™ 2080 Series Side View Mirror Wraps, available in over 130 different colors and textures. Whichever look you prefer, you’ll be able to include your mirrors in the finished product.

Door Handles

Door handles are one of the most likely parts of your vehicle to be chromed over by the manufacturer. They’re another detail you’ll want to remember when you apply your chrome delete finish. You might also want to apply 3M™ Pro Series Door Handle Protection Wraps - they’re clear in appearance, and they offer protection from scratches and other damage.

Grille

You might not think that it’d be possible to wrap your grille, but you’d be wrong. With 3M™ dual-cast films with Comply technology, you can wrap even the craziest of curves. However, the Series 2080 films aren’t your only option. Rwraps™ vinyl wraps are another ideal way to wrap your chromed-out grille because they’re also heat-activated and use air-drain adhesives.

Whichever brand you choose, you can rest easy knowing you’re going to get a long-lasting look that beats the dips and sprays. Plus, you can get patterns and finishes you just won’t find anywhere else. Check out the Rwraps™ Sticker Bomb window trim chrome delete or the Matte Red chrome color change grille wrap for a pop of color!

Popular Wrap Colors and Finishes

Vinyl wraps give you unmatched freedom for deciding how to cover up chrome details. You can choose from dozens of colors and patterns and pick a finish that achieves the desired effect. Some of the most popular options for chrome delete colors and finishes include:

Colors

Although a lot of people use black vinyl to cover chrome details, you can use any color you prefer. If you want something that pops out, vinyl will make that happen. Feel free to shop by color if you have a color choice in mind.

Color-Matching

If you don’t have a black paint job, you can still use chrome delete to make chromed-over elements blend with the rest of your car’s body. All you have to do is use a color-matching vinyl. The overall effect is sure to be stylish and sophisticated. Color-matching is one of the best ways to use chrome delete vinyl.

Finishes

You’ll also have your choice of different finishes, which can make a big difference in the overall effect. Here are some popular finish options you might prefer.

  • Carbon fiber: A carbon fiber finish is perfect for your chrome delete because it gives off the impression of woven graphite. While it looks especially good in black, you can find carbon fiber finishes for any color preference. A carbon fiber finish will provide a visually interesting overall effect while maintaining the sleek look you want.
  • Gloss: For a smoother look, you might choose a gloss finish. It achieves the look and feel of an expert paint job - it’s perfect for those small chrome details, but you could also use it across your car’s entire exterior. Choose gloss if you want your chrome delete elements to blend with the factory paint.
  • Satin: Another option is a satin finish. One of the most popular chrome delete options is the 3M™ Wrap Film Series 2080 in Satin Black. Satin is a bit less lustrous than gloss, appearing almost like velvet. It’s a great option if you want understated chrome delete details.
  • Matte: Lots of people prefer a matte finish for those chrome delete elements, especially those who are matching to a vinyl matte body. Matte finishes are a stylish choice, producing a unique effect impossible to achieve otherwise. Use the 3M™ Wrap Film Series 2080 in Dead Matte Black for matte black chrome delete.

Get All the Chrome Delete You Need

Now that you know what is available, you’ll need to decide how much Series 2080 or Rwraps™ film you’ll need to buy. Of course, a lot depends on you and how you decide to tackle your wrap project, but we can give you a pretty good estimate of how much you’ll need.

We recommend a minimum of 12 inches by 60 inches for all of the window trim on a standard-sized vehicle, but you may need more or less depending on how much bling you’ve got on your ride. Regardless, if you’re stuck, feel free to send us a message and we’ll help you delete the chrome from your ride in no time!
