Hummer: From the Army with Love

First launched in 1992 by AM General when it began to produce a non-military version of its M998 Humvee, Hummers have been icons of rugged American style and engineering made famous by sports stars and rappers . The first-ever Hummer began its lifer as the High Mobility Multi-purpose Vehicle (also known as the Hum-vee) and was developed for the US military in the 80s. After rigorous all-terrain testing the original Humvees gained a reputation for their dependability and strength leading just at the time that the SUV craze of the 1990s was beginning to take hold of the consumer market. In 1998, after tremendous success AM General sold the brand to GM who would later take the marque and release the H2 and H3.

The H1

The original Hummer H1 came in three types: a hard-top, a convertible and a wagon. Alternate but less popular versions were the pick-up configuration and a four door “slant-back” style. All H1s came with automatic transmissions and came replete with a V8 engine. After GM acquired the company, they began to work on developing smaller, more consumer friendly Hummers and the H2 was born. In 2003, the H2 appeared on the scene with a slimmer profile and a higher roofline. The H2 could comfortably seat six adults and ran on a 6.2L V8 that produced 393 hp. At the same time that GM was producing H2s in the US it was exporting the H1 to foreign markets although the popularity of the smaller Hummer caused the line to be discontinued shortly after 2006.

The H3 Hummer

The third iteration of the Hummer, the H3, was introduced in 2006 and offered a more compact and affordable option than its predecessors. Built off of the GMT355 platform, it shares its frame with the Chevrolet Colorado and the GMC Canyon. The H3 was both shorter and had a narrower wheelbase than the H1 and is classed as a mid-size SUV. In addition to its smaller size the H3 was also available with a pick up bed like its big brother the H2 and this option was referred to as the H3T (the H2T for the H2).
