Saab began its life as an automakr as a manufacturter of military hardware for the Swedish airforce. Sweden was building a defense force to protect its neutrality during the World War
II As the threat receded, so did the need to build aircraft. With
factories and a workforce, the firm turned to the production of
passenger vehicles in order to put its excess capacity to good use.
Despite the the fact that Saab will never again be produced under the
"Saab" nameplate, its pedigree
and past will inspire enthusiasts worldwide for
decades to come. Saab's claim to fame as a manufacturer of unique and
rugged cars began at its very inception. In 1947, at the end of the
Second World War, the company decided to go into automotive
manufacturing to deliver affordable yet durable cars to Swedes
everywhere. The harsh environment of its Nordic winters and the
engineering prowess it had developed throughout WWII made these
aerodynamic, two-stroke wonders the darling of the European auto
Fast forward 40 years, and Saab is seeing its best years ever. The
80s saw a resurgence in the European luxury vehicle market and Saab's
idiosyncratic engineering and unique aeronautic styling served to
differentiate it from its Teutonic competitors. As a result, the Saab
released its BMW 5-Series killer the 9000 sedan and continued to
engineer and design great pieces of automotive artistry and performance
throughout the following decades.
